This is where QT Lite steps in. Like Quicktime, it allows you to view streamed audio and video (especially MOV files) inside your browser. Unlike Quicktime it runs fast and quietly -- and the nifty integrated MOV Download Tool even lets you save the videos to your hard disk.
There is also a version with a separate player (viz, MPlayer), called "QT Alternative" ("QT Lite" is actually the "light" version of "QT Alternative" and used to be called "QT Alternative Lite"). QT Lite is preferable if you want to choose your own player, which I reckon is true in the majority of cases.
The same author also offers a "Real Alternative" package to substitute the Real Player.
So, how does it work? In each case, the author hasn't reverse-engineered or rewritten the entire software; instead he has taken the original packages and stripped away all of the rigmarole. The resulting products are all legal, by the way.
